March 24-26 was our second FRC district competition this season. We competed against 39 Michigan robotics teams at Mason High School in Mason, Mich., for Week 4 of FIRST in Michigan. With our previous experiences at the Battle Creek event, we were hopeful to bring home a blue banner.
Friday was the first day of competition with 56 qualifying matches. At the end of the day, the Corsairs were ranked in second place. However, with some teams finishing the day with fewer matches played, we expected to drop a bit in rankings on Saturday.
On Saturday, during the remaining qualifying rounds, we ended in second place with more ranking points than our last competition. Because we had the most autonomous points at our ranking point level, we were able to secure a strong second place finish after the qualifying matches.
We were excited to be chosen by Team 1684, Chimeras, to join Alliance 1. Our alliance's second pick was Team 1504, Desperate Penguins. Unfortunately, our alliance fell short in the quarter-finals with the first match seeing Team 1504 lose communication on the field. Team 1684 needed robot repairs after the first match. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to fix the problems correctly before the second match. It was a major upset to lose to Alliance 8 and not advance to the semi-finals.
We were disappointed that we weren’t able to show off our high-goal shooter and scaling capabilities, but we continued to show our strength in breaching defenses and taking down the tower with low-ball goals: https://twitter.com/CorsairRobotics/status/713461608329121792. We also were known to help out our alliance partners who got stuck while breaching defenses. https://twitter.com/CorsairRobotics/status/713747184311799808. It's all about teamwork!
Our social media team captured all of the action on Twitter with #LansingFRC. Check out the page and see some more videos and photos from the event.
Overall, we ended in 11th place in district points for the Mason event. We now have 77 district points total, which we hope will be enough to earn us a spot in in the FIRST in Michigan regional event on April 14-16 in Grand Rapids. We will know for sure in two weeks. Let’s go, Corsairs!
