FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international competition for elementary and middle school students. The robotics part of the competition revolves around designing and programming Lego Mindstorms robots to complete tasks. The students work out solutions to the various problems they are given and then meet for regional tournaments to share their knowledge, compare ideas, and display their robots.
Corsair Robotics 2612 has been lucky enough to help out two Waterford FLL teams this year. During the past few weeks, we’ve sent volunteers to be student mentors. We’re proud to have played a part in helping these teams get ready for their competitions Saturday.
Here’s a little bit about the teams:
Groovy Girls: The Girl Scout team members are Kaylea, Lily, Alexis, Carley, Kirsten, Hailee, Ellie, and Emily. Groovy Girls fist struggled with programming, their skit, as well as team challenges. They met twice a week on Sundays and Wednesdays, 4 pm to 5:30 pm. After a few weeks, though, not only have the girls been able to improve their robot, they have also fine-tuned a presentation on reusing cookie boxes. They are now strategizing and communicating better during practice team challenges.
Go Big Go Brick: On Tuesday, Nov. 24, seven members from Corsair Robotics came to give support to the all-boy team from Waterford’s Grayson Elementary School. Although they were far behind on getting their robot ready for competition, the team was almost complete with their skit about recycling clothes. They also communicate extremely well and were able to complete any team challenge. Within a few hours, the team was able to move and complete a few robot objectives. They still have a few more meetings, and they have big plans to get it all done. Now armed with a game plan, Angel, Gabriel, Evan, Ian H, Ian C, Noah, and Nathan will give all they’ve got at their competition.
Both teams will be competing from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday, Dec. 5 at West Bloomfield High School. Corsair Robotics 2612 will be showcasing our robots and walking in the Holiday Extravaganza parade in downtown Pontiac on Saturday, but we’re hopeful to attend the competition later in the day and cheer on both teams. Good luck to both teams!
Let’s go, FLL!
