This past Saturday at 10:30 am, the wait was finally over. Thousands of teams, including ours, tuned into the world broadcast of the 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition challenge, FIRST STRONGHOLD. According to the game materials, “Alliances of three robots are on a Quest to breach their opponents’ fortifications, weaken their tower with boulders, and capture their tower.”
Here is a basic overview of the game:
Not even a minute after watching the broadcast video, members of our team met to plan strategies and tactics to gain an edge over the competition. We started by reading the game manual from front to back and soon discovered that some ideas that we thought were good, turned out to be rule breakers. Clearly, this was going to take more time and a lot of brainstorming, which is exactly what we did all day Sunday. We now have a few good options of basic robot design sketched out, and we will continue to develop them further at our next team meeting.
Mentors are now finalizing our build deadlines and team schedules, team members are researching mechanisms for inspiration, and we’re all excited for what the next six weeks will bring.
As team captain, I have high hopes for the Corsairs. Our team has proven its ability to work well as a team, our senior members are working hard to teach our new members the ropes, and our new members are jumping right in with great ideas and enthusiasm. We’re excited for this new season and hope we live up to the hype.
Let’s go, Corsairs!
